Breaking it Down – Lighting in our Sound Stage Studio

Using cyclo.

Why photographers chose cycloramas is just one of those unanswered questions we take for granted. The purpose of this multi-use space is to create an illusion for the eye where the vanishing point becomes infinite. In photography, achieving this allows for the visuals created to live almost anywhere, from e-commerce to social platforms. The possibilities are as limitless as your imagination.

Equipment fundamentals.

While this really depends on your overall goal, lighting a cyclo can seem daunting, but it shouldn’t be. More often than not a two light set up is more than enough to pull you through most situations. The expanse of the white wall, and its curve allow for light to wrap itself around the subject(s), thus needing less light to achieve your desired style of photograph.

Tether, tether & tether some more.

Most who begin studio photography often get so caught up in the technical aspects of light, angle & direction, down to posing and positioning (all incredibly important). But one fundamental reason you shoot in a controlled setting is just that, control. Taking a photograph and simply looking in the rear LCD screen of your camera just isn’t going to cut it if you want to improve. Having a simple tether set up that drives your camera into Lightroom or Capture One (most pros prefer this) allows for a slower pace, control and most importantly confirmation that what you think you are getting from your camera is in line with your vision.

Space.

While most cyclos are large due to the need for space and buildout, ours is located on a 2000 sq ft soundstage. Sounds huge, doesn’t it? Well it is, but with a purpose. Having the flexibility to fill the space with as much or as little as you need allows for any project to run simultaneously.

This means you are able to expand and shrink anything you might want to work on. Ultimately the use of the space is only limited by your imagination, and that should make it far less daunting.
