Meet Maria Todaro, &Miami Member and the powerhouse General Director of Florida Grand Opera (FGO), who is redefining the opera experience in Miami. Born into a family of celebrated opera singers, Maria’s passion for the arts runs deep. Her journey to the stage was inspired by her Italian tenor father and Brazilian mezzo-soprano mother, and her leadership at FGO reflects her drive to blend tradition with innovation. With a fresh vision for the company, Maria aims to make opera more accessible and exciting for South Florida’s diverse community, all while staying true to her roots.
Under her guidance, FGO is not only preserving its rich 83-year history but also embracing the future with bold performances that echo Miami’s colorful and dynamic spirit. This season, FGO promises to be a reflection of the city’s elegance and vibrancy, proving that, as the Miami Herald says, “FGO is not your grandmother’s opera.” Read more about Maria in her spotlight below:
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Maria Todaro, General Director of Florida Grand Opera.
What’s something we don’t know about you?
I come from a long lineage of opera singers and am also an opera singer and stage director. My parents, José Todaro, an Italian tenor, and Maria-Helena de Oliveira, a Brazilian mezzo-soprano, greatly influenced my path. My grandmother, Helena de Oliveira, led the International Vocal and Piano Competition in Rio de Janeiro. Fun fact: I was also an MMA fighter and certified stage combat choreographer Additionally, Florida Grand Opera is the oldest arts institution in Florida, and it’s where Pavarotti made his U.S. debut.
What inspires or motivates you to get out of bed?
My love for opera and the opportunity we have at FGO to redefine it on a global scale while creating a welcoming environment for the South Florida community. Many don’t realize FGO is a nonprofit, so we rely on donations and ticket sales to keep this 83-year-old institution thriving.
What is one thing you can’t live without?
My phone. Being new to Miami, I rely on it for everything, especially navigating the city with Waze!
Where do your brightest ideas come from?
From my spirituality and relationship to the divine, I see it everywhere.. I’m inspired by the vibrant beauty around Miami. You’ll notice that in our upcoming season, with references to local culture—bright colors, elegance, and beauty are central to FGO’s new direction. As the Miami Herald put it, “FGO is not your grandmother’s opera.”
How do you spark your creativity when you’re feeling in a rut?
I honestly I rarely feel in a rut.. I know I’m pretentious.. but if I do.. I pop in my earbuds, listen to favorite arias, Pray, meditate and go for a long walk. It clears my mind and keeps me fit—got to make sure I fit into gowns for the season!
Where is your favorite place to decompress and unwind?
A night out with good company and great food. I love exploring Miami’s food scene, and my list of places to try keeps growing.
When do you feel your best, and what do you do to stay in good vibrations?
I feel my best during opera season, especially on opening night. To stay in good spirits, I remind myself and the team that every challenge can be addressed and overcome.
Why did you choose Ampersand Studios as your workspace?
We love the Miami vibe here being surrounded by art constantly, the kind welcome of the staff AND the energy aligns with FGO’s spirit. Plus, it’s conveniently close to our home performance venue, the Adrienne Arsht Center, and the Design District’s creativity fuels us.
