Meet Anna Fisher, an artist based in Nashville, TN. Anna is one of the local artists that we collaborate with and spotlight in our space. If you’ve visited Ampersand Studios Nashville, you’ve probably seen Anna’s artwork and are familiar with her newest pieces.

Her creative practice spans across two distinct fields: the world of scientific research and development in medical imaging, as well as the visual arts. Join us as we learn more about Anna, her art, and how she finds inspiration:

What could you never live without?

“My two beloved cats, Atticus and Boulette. They are little fairies who fill my life with never-ending joy and happiness.”

At what age did you realize you wanted to be an artist / creator?

“My journey towards becoming an artist began around five years old. My upbringing was unique in several ways. Most notable was that my grandmother worked as the librarian at the local high school. Throughout the school year at the end of each day, I spent every afternoon in the library while my grandmother finished her faculty work. During this time, the library transformed into my personal sanctuary. It was a living world of its own, alive with stories and information on every subject imaginable. The library was my primary source of comfort, a place of solace, and an endless supply of enchantment that I hold profound affection for. It is where my fascination with creativity and visual expression was cultivated, and it played a pivotal role in shaping both my life and professional career in the fields of science and visual art.”

What inspires you?

“Exploring new places and experiencing the unfamiliar is an infinite source of inspiration for me. I find great joy in planning a trip without a fixed itinerary. My capacity to understand and appreciate the unfamiliar is most profound when I am completely attuned with my surroundings. It is an electrifying feeling that consistently generates new ideas for me.”

What project do you have coming up next?

“Currently, I’m preparing a presentation scheduled for later this month at Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science. I am honored to be a guest speaker at the Imaging Science Seminar, which is hosted by my dear friend Dr. Todd Peterson and the Master of Imaging Science Program. I am also in the process of expanding and refining my digital art portfolio.”

What advice would you give to up-and-coming artists or kids who dream to become artists one day?

“Let the vision of your dream be your most trusted companion. Allow it to serve as your guiding light through life’s labyrinth. Protect it, nurture it, and trust that it will steer you accordingly.

Cultivate the ability to discern when support from others can be valuable along your journey, and do not hesitate to ask for help when it can be beneficial. Assistance is readily available to those who actively seek it. Consider finding a mentor or establishing a supportive network of individuals from whom you can gain valuable insights.”

Tell us a little bit more about your muse?

“The concept of je ne sais quoi will forever be my muse. I am always hoping to encounter the special elements in life that I perceive as magical, mysterious, or indescribable. The human brain is trained to organize the external world into familiar categories, when I experience something that defies categorization, that is when I feel most captivated.”
